On Sunday 15 May 2011, nearly 5,000 cyclists took to the closed roads of Pitlochry and the surrounding area, to complete one of the UK's premier cycling challenges; the Etape Caledonia.
The Etape Caledonia is 81 miles, and with almost 2,000 metres of climbing it is no easy ride. Part of the reason it's so popular!
To ensure that the roads are reopened to the schedule agreed with the authorities, participants need to maintain an average speed of 13mph. This allows 6 hours and 15 minutes to reach the finishing line within the closure window.
This event is expertly organised with time chips and feed stations. For more information take a look at the FAQs.
